The turning point is when you stop “trying” and start identifying as the kind of person who wins by default the way Marilyn and I have reinvented ourselves over the last 7 decades. So, this blog hopefully teaches how to identify the Person you want to become.
Most people try to change their life by changing their actions.
But actions are the surface.
Identity is the root.
If you want to transform your life, your business, your habits, your results, you don’t start with what you do.
You start with who you believe you are.
Because here’s the truth:
You will never outperform your identity.
But you will always live up to it.
The moment identity changed everything for us.
When we were young, we didn’t see ourselves as clever.
We didn’t see ourselves as capable.
We didn’t see ourselves as people who could build anything meaningful.
I couldn’t read or write my own name.
I ran from one job to another to escape being humiliated over 9 years.
In contrast to me Marilyn was a very intelligent girl but was excruciatingly shy and afraid to talk to anyone.
The day everything changed wasn’t the day we opened our first shop.
It wasn’t the day we made our first sale.
It wasn’t the day we hit our first million.
It was the day we stopped seeing ourselves as victims of circumstance and started seeing ourselves as people who could learn, improve, and get out of the rut we were in, simply by daring to have our own hopes wants needs and dreams.
That identity shift changed the trajectory of our entire life.
Identity drives behaviour. Not the other way around.
People say:
“I want to be more disciplined.”
“I want to be more confident.”
“I want to be more successful.”
But wanting doesn’t change anything.
Identity does.
When you see yourself as a disciplined person, you act like one.
When you see yourself as a learner, you learn.
When you see yourself as someone who finishes what they start, you finish.
Identity is the script your actions follow.
A story from the early days.
When we were building our first and all subsequence businesses, we didn’t see ourselves as “small business owners.”
We didn’t see ourselves as “just another local shop.” Or a small property maintenance odd job business.
We didn’t see ourselves as “people trying to survive.” Although we were at that time.
We saw ourselves as:
– People who served customers better than anyone else in that trade.
– People who learned faster than anyone.
– People who improved every day.
– People who showed up no matter what.
– People who were building businesses that lasted.
That identity shaped every decision we made.
It shaped how we treated people.
It shaped how we solved problems.
It shaped how we grew.
We didn’t win because we were lucky.
We won because we became the kind of people who win.
How identity is built (Not Born).
Identity isn’t something you’re given.
It’s something you build brick by brick through your daily choices.
Here’s how it works:
1. You choose the identity you want.
Not the one you inherited.
Not the one life handed you.
The one you decide.
2. You take small actions that prove it.
Every action is a vote for the person you want to become.
3. You repeat those actions consistently.
Repetition turns behaviour into identity.
4. Identity becomes automatic.
You no longer try to be disciplined you are disciplined.
You no longer try to be resilient you are resilient.
You no longer try to win you expect to win.
That’s when you become the person who wins by default.
The identity shift that changes everything.
Here’s the shift that separates the average from the elite:
Average people ask: “What do I need to do?”
Elite people ask: “Who do I need to become?”
Because when you become the right person, the right actions follow naturally.
You don’t force discipline it’s who you are.
You don’t force consistency it’s who you are.
You don’t force improvement it’s who you are.
Identity makes winning inevitable.
Challenge for This Week.
Forget goals.
Forget motivation.
Forget trying to change everything at once.
Ask yourself one question:
“Who is the person I need to become to live the life I want?”
Then choose one small action each day that proves you are that person.
Because identity isn’t built in a moment.
It’s built in the moments you think don’t matter.
And when you stack enough of those moments, you become someone unstoppable.
Someone consistent.
Someone disciplined.
Someone resilient.
Someone who wins not by accident, not by luck, but by identity.
Become the person who wins by default.
