Introduction
As a board-certified cardiologist, my approach to heart health often goes against the grain. While many of my colleagues routinely prescribe statin drugs to manage cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk, I avoid them—and for good reason.
Statin drugs (like atorvastatin, simvastatin, and rosuvastatin) are among the most commonly prescribed medications worldwide. They work by lowering cholesterol, but the side effects and long-term consequences often outweigh the benefits. Here’s why I don’t recommend them—and what you should know before taking them.
1. Statins Deplete CoQ10 – A Critical Energy Molecule
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is essential for mitochondrial function—the powerhouse of our cells. Statins drastically lower CoQ10 levels, leading to:
- Fatigue
- Muscle weakness
- Impaired cellular energy production
Without enough CoQ10, your body struggles to generate ATP (energy), which can leave you feeling exhausted and contribute to long-term health issues.
2. Statins Inhibit Heme A – Disrupting the Electron Transport Chain
Heme A is a crucial component of cytochrome c oxidase, a key enzyme in the electron transport chain (the process that generates energy in mitochondria). By interfering with heme A production, statins may:
- Reduce cellular energy efficiency
- Accelerate mitochondrial dysfunction
- Contribute to chronic fatigue and metabolic disorders
3. Statins Deplete Dolichol – Increasing Risk of Brain Disorders
Dolichol is a vital molecule concentrated in the substantia nigra (a brain region linked to movement control). Low dolichol levels are associated with:
- Parkinson’s disease
- Other neurodegenerative disorders
Since statins inhibit dolichol production, long-term use could increase the risk of midbrain-related conditions.
4. Statins Lower Cholesterol Too Much – And That’s a Problem
Cholesterol isn’t the villain it’s made out to be. It’s essential for:
- Vitamin D synthesis
- Hormone production (testosterone, estrogen, cortisol)
- Cell membrane integrity
- Brain function (your brain is 60% fat!)
Artificially suppressing cholesterol can lead to hormonal imbalances, cognitive decline, and even depression.
5. Statins Can Damage the Liver
One of the most common side effects of statins is elevated liver enzymes, indicating liver stress or damage. While some argue this is rare, the risk remains—especially for those with pre-existing liver conditions.
6. Statins Cause Muscle Damage (Including the Heart!)
Statin-induced myopathy (muscle damage) is well-documented. Symptoms include:
- Muscle pain
- Weakness
- Elevated creatine kinase (CK) levels
Worse yet, since the heart is a muscle, statins may weaken cardiac function over time.
7. Statins May Harm the Brain
Low cholesterol is linked to:
- Memory problems
- Increased dementia risk
- Neurodegenerative diseases
Since statins reduce cholesterol, they may contribute to cognitive decline—especially in older adults.
8. Statins Don’t Fix the Root Cause of Heart Disease
The biggest issue? Statins don’t address why people develop cardiovascular disease in the first place.
Heart disease is driven by:
- Chronic inflammation
- Insulin resistance
- Oxidative stress
- Poor diet & lifestyle
Instead of just lowering cholesterol, we should focus on:
- Anti-inflammatory nutrition (healthy fats, antioxidants)
- Blood sugar control
- Stress management
- Exercise

A 2017 JAMA study found that statins increased mortality in adults over 65. Yet, they’re still heavily prescribed to this age group.
Final Thoughts
While statins may have a role in certain high-risk cases, their widespread use ignores their dangerous side effects and fails to treat the real causes of heart disease.

- Omega-3s & anti-inflammatory foods
- Exercise & stress reduction
- Regular metabolic testing
