If you are new to business or have been going for some years, it would be nice to hear your thoughts.
Most mentors will tell you not to sweat over the small stuff and go large, but I do it differently; I do the opposite.
I am talking about business, not your everyday small stuff like someone cutting you up in traffic, a broken appointment or the electricity going off.
None of that small stuff matters, but when these things and many more troubles happen, take a deep breath and ask yourself, will getting angry today make any difference in a year? No, then it’s too tiny to even respond to.
If you don’t look after and pay attention to the small stuff, the big still will not stand the pressures over time.
But it’s an entirely different matter if the small stuff will affect your business in a day, a week or years later; you have to sweat the small stuff if you’re selling your business in 10 years, the small stuff today that is wrong can cost you millions of pounds yearly throughout your business life and when you come to sell.
What do I mean by the term sweating the small stuff? You need to look after the basics, like never paying interest on credit cards, never paying late payment charges because you should be paying all the bills on time, and never buying anything that will go down in value unless you can make more money out of it than it costs you.
Some of your goals should include
To become the best supplier that your customers have ever had.
To become the best account holder your bank has ever had.
To become the best payer that your suppliers have ever had.
To become the best employer that your employees have ever had.
To give more value to your customers so, they are the winners.
To make more money than any other company in your market sector.
To say you will do something, then do it; if not, say you cannot.
To cultivate a common sense approach to all your business dealings.
To cultivate a logical way of thinking in all decision-making.
To cultivate a team that understands the business.
To cultivate raving fans for your business and not just ordinary customers.
All this and more is sweating the small stuff for your business to stand the pressure when the shite hits the fan, as it is inevitable that it’s going to happen.
So, sweat the small stuff, get it right and keep moving every day and every night; never stop growing, making sure the small stuff is done every day like clockwork.
