In life, we all have turning points, but we often don’t even think that they are at the time, realizing years later what happened to make you go in a different direction on a particular day and why not the day before.

I had one of these turning points 22 years ago, in 2000, when Marilyn brought home another new pair of trousers for me, but with a difference from all the other pairs that she had bought over the last few years on a very regular basis.

You see, I was not only rapidly expanding our business; I was expanding my waistline as well. My answer to keeping control of my waistline was to get a larger pair of trousers which I thought was fair game because I did have a bad back, so I needed to relax on the exercise and improve the quantity of nourishment going into my body.

The turning point came that day; not only did she bring me these hideous expanding trousers saying that they would last me through many years of expansion, she also was kind enough to give me a pair of slip-on shoes as I had got to the point of not being able to do my own shoes up, and to top it off she had bought me a two-foot shoehorn.

I often think, what if I hadn’t had that turning point.

Or was it through the love of Marilyn wanting me to be happy that she bought those things, or was it reverse psychology to get me to a turning point?
