Once we had created and sold a successful business in 1980, I explored why we achieved our goal while others struggled even though all the people were older and had much more experience than both of us.

Fast forward to today, when I do my business talks, one of the frequently asked questions is can you give me three secrets that successful people use?

Usually, my answer is that there are a thousand secrets to growing a successful and profitable business, and they are all so easy that everyone can use them; common sense is one of them.

It also includes eight traits that hopefully come naturally to anyone ambitious enough to succeed.

People forget that success is a journey and a destination. At the same time, the path to success may look different for everyone; certain traits and habits consistently set successful people apart.

Hard Work
Hard work is the cornerstone of success. It involves putting in the effort, time, and energy required to achieve your goals. Successful people understand that there are no shortcuts. They are willing to go the extra mile, work late hours, and push through challenges to reach their objectives. (we still work 16 hours a day at the age of 74, only because we want to).

Patience
Patience is a virtue that many overlook (including me). Success rarely happens overnight. It requires time, perseverance, and the ability to stay calm (I am still learning that one) and composed even when things don’t go as planned. Those who are patient understand that setbacks are part of the journey and use them as learning opportunities.

Consistency
Consistency is vital to building momentum and achieving long-term success. It’s about showing up every day, putting in the work, and maintaining a fast pace. Successful individuals are consistent in their efforts, whether practising a skill, working on a project, or maintaining healthy habits.

Discipline
Discipline is staying focused and committed to your goals, even when distractions arise. It involves setting clear boundaries, creating routines, and sticking to them. Discipline helps successful people stay on track and avoid procrastination. I got my ADHD to work for me in this extraordinary situation.

Self-Confidence
Self-confidence is believing in your abilities and trusting that you can achieve your goals. It’s about having a positive self-image and not being afraid to take risks. However, many successful people never start with lots of confidence or a positive image; it is the opposite; you have to work at it every single day of your life.

Positive Attitude
A positive attitude can significantly affect how you approach challenges and setbacks. Successful individuals maintain an optimistic outlook, even in difficult times. They focus on solutions rather than problems and believe every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

Focus
Focus is the ability to concentrate on your goals and avoid distractions. It’s about prioritizing tasks, setting clear objectives, and staying committed to your vision. Successful people have a laser-like focus on what they want to achieve and don’t let anything deter them from their path.

By cultivating these traits, anyone can increase their chances of achieving their goals and living a successful life.
